DIVERSE LEARNERS

Implemented one-to-one adaptive courses for students with special needs to provide an educational platform where students can express thoughts and emotions through Art, Music, Physical Education and Robotics classes.

ADAPTIVE ROBOTICS
Lane Tech Robotics Team, X-Machina has created a CPS course called Adaptive Robotics, which allows students with Autism Spectrum Disorder to use their creativity and work as a team to make robots that perform various tasks. I have been mentoring Have Dreams Foundation’s FTC robotics team for students with Autism.

ADAPTIVE ART
Adaptive Art is a course where students with disabilities are paired with students from the general population at Lane. The pairs are “buddies” and together they make art using a variety of materials and techniques. The class is similar in structure to an Art 1 class, however it is tailored specifically to the highly individualized needs of those students who enroll in the course. Sculpture, painting and drawing will all be explored as students create work from their imagination and observation. General education students will act as mentors, will assist the teacher, will create lesson plans and will also make art themselves.

ADAPTIVE MUSIC
The goal of this course is emotional and social enrichment through music. Honors students will work closely with the teacher to provide musical achievement that caters to the diverse needs of our student population. This will be done through the incorporation of singing, movement, playing games and instruments.

ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Students who wish to pursue experience working with peers that have cognitive or neural disabilities may elect to take the Lane Tech Adaptive PE class.

“Leaders in Physical Education” is a unique physical education class experience where exemplary regular education students have the opportunity to assist students with special needs with adapted physical education class. The class is designed for students to be a “leader” to a special needs “buddy” during their physical education class. The “leaders” support their “buddy” by providing them assistance in physical activities and positive social interaction. This class benefits all students and demonstrates great character in students who understands its importance.

This is a great class for students with patience, who possess willingness to help a student with special needs, but most of all have the ability to care for another individual and develop a friendship.
